Problems pile up for Ajax opponent Benfica after losing in ‘Classico’

Benficas problems got a little bigger on Thursday evening. O Glorioso, opponent of Ajax in the eighth final of the Champions League in 2022, lost the Portuguese classic 3-1 to FC Porto.
In the top of the Primeira Liga, Benfica was number three prior to Portugal
s biggest match and needed a away victory at Porto to stay connected. That had to happen without trainer Jorge Jesus, who was fired by the club board of the Lisbon formation after an argument with captain Pizzi.
That did not cause a shock effect, because after 37 minutes Benfica looked at a 2-0 backlog in the Estรกdio do Dragao. Via Fรกbio Vieira and Pepe, Porto came to a simple lead, but just after the break it became a bit exciting. Roman Yaremchuk made it 2-1, but Benficas joy was short-lived.
Andrรฉ Almeida took a red card in minute fifty and fifteen minutes after that Mehdi Taremi decided the game by making it 3-1. That stand no longer changed and so Benfica, which will play two games against Ajax in 2022, is now facing a backlog of seven points at frontrunner Porto and number two Sporting.
