Nyck de Vries had a productive day during the Formula One test in Abu Dhabi. For the Dutch driver (25) it was his debut in a king class car.
De Vries drove 110 laps in the car of world champion Lewis Hamilton and drove a fastest lap of 1,36,595. That was the second time of the day. Only Fernando Alonso was more than two tenths of a second faster.
The experienced Spaniard (39) was given permission from the FIA to come out in the Young Driver Test, in preparation for his return to Formula 1 at Renault, which will live as Alpine next year in the king class.
Mick Schumacher was the slowest of the day, but drove 125 laps. The German drives next for Haas. Yuki Tsunoda recorded the fifth time in his AlphaTauri. The Japanese is expected to soon be announced as a new driver in the sister team of Red Bull Racing.
“ It was incredible. The car is so fast,” says De Vries, nowadays active for Mercedes in Formula E. “You get used to speed and acceleration very quickly, in fact already immediately. But the braking and the speeds in the corners are unreal.”
