Promes is good with Ajax. ‘Arsenal? I’m surprised at that interest’

It was a week of extremes for Quincy Promes. From the Ajax training camp in Austria, the striker first learned that national coach Ronald Koeman was leaving. After that, good news: he and his teammates are sure of the Champions League.

That Koeman traded in the Dutch national team for Barcelona after a successful period is a pity for Promes. “We have suffered a big loss, but the quality of the players is not decreasing. We’ll have to do without him now.”

Ten Hag as successor Koeman?

Speculating about his successor doesn’t want Promes: “I don’t name names, but there are plenty who can take over.” His coach at Ajax for example, Erik ten Hag? “He could handle it, but his focus is on Ajax.”

And Ten Hag later agreed: he’s not available.

Champions League and interest of Arsenal

In that context, it is important that Ajax, by losing Olympique Lyonnais in the semi-finals of the Champions League for next season, is sure of a place in the group stage of multi-million ball. As a result, Andrรฉ Onana, Donny van de Beek and Nicolรกs Tagliafico may stay longer in Amsterdam.

“Players will now think twice when another club comes,” Promes says. “We’re playing Champions League, so you don’t just trade Ajax in. Everyone has to decide that for themselves, we don’t talk about that much among ourselves.”

Self, Promes is associated with Arsenal. “That’s a rumour, I can’t go into it. I’m surprised at the interest. I’ve just been here a year. Everyone knows I’m happy here, I’m not eager to leave.”

The question is, if he stays, at which position Promes will be deployed at Ajax. “That’s not certain yet. I can striker, left, right and on ten. It can vary. I don’t have a preference, I really don’t.”

Ten Hag prefers to see Promes behind the rush

Ten Hag has Promes preferably at ten, behind the rush hour. “That’s what I’m opting for. But that also depends on whether Donny van de Beek stays or not. It’s hard to pin him to a position.”
