Trainer Ronald Koeman has lost in the eighth final of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain at Camp Nou with FC Barcelona by more than 1-4. It will therefore be a hell of a job for the Blaugranas to reach the quarter-finals. Kylian Mbappé was the big man on the side of the Parisians with a hat trick.
PSG missed the other big star, Neymar, due to an injury, but didnt need it to lay a solid foundation for a spot at the last eight of the championship ball. The other superstar of the French, Mbappé, put about the whole of FC Barcelona on the rack Tuesday night.
The first big chance – for the home club – was for Antoine Griezmann, after a clever pass from Pedri, but the Frenchman came across PSG keeper Keylor Navas.
Mauro Icardi was then there as the chickens at the other side a few minutes later, but his somewhat too soft bet was removed from the line.
Penalty kick Barcelona
But the team of trainer Koeman got the greatest chance in the 26th minute. Referee Bjorn Kuipers saw that Frenkie de Jong was crocheted within sixtemeter and pointed at the dot. It seemed strongly that the Orange-International was tackling itself. However, the penalty remained and Messi shot the ball hard behind the uncanned Navas: 1-0.
Two minutes it should have stood 2-0. Messi laid the ball wide and therefore ready for Ousmane Dembele, but his roller was a breeze for Navas. It reminded us of the Champions League semi-final between the Catalans and Liverpool in 2019, when the same happened at a 3-0 lead in the final phase. In the return the Blaugranas then lost 4-0 on Anfield.
Mbappé shows class
instead of 2-0, it didnt turn 1-1 much later. Marco Verratti found Mbappé in the penalty area. The French vedette acted quickly, cut off and shot the 1-1 against the ropes with the left. The striker coveted by Real Madrid showed its class here.
FC Barcelona staggered, because a minute later the constantly rising left-back Layvin Kurzawa shot the ball just off, the hand of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Segen prevented this. A counter from a corner then almost got Barcelona ahead, but Griezmann shot in front. Just before rest, Icardi from a corner headed the ball just next to it. In the game, the Catalans were not strong.
Back and forth
Mbappé was constantly threatening, even immediately after the tea break. His stakes flew right next door. The defense barely got hold of the fast-paced attacker. After this, Ter Segen had to act again. But the big difference on Tuesday night was Mbappé again. In the 65th minute, he struck again. Dest did not lift up well, the ball was advancing and Mbappé was quick to sign the 1-2. Certainly old Ajacied Dest could not get a hold of the French striker at all.
Five minutes later, Koemans Champions League dream was captured by Moise Kean, who was able to score freely on the second pole: 1-3.
As if the 1-3 were not bad enough, it also became 1-4. neatly prepared for the running Mbappé. He then shot the ball in the top corner. Hattrick for him and an illusion poorer for Koeman and FC Barcelona.
