Football: Genk takes legal action after continuing the snow match
18.20 hrs: After Genk trainer John van den Brom had expressed all his dissatisfaction with the continuation of the duel with Excelsior Mouscron the club offers legal action a day later. Both teams met on a field almost unplayable by the snow. Genk lost 2-0. “As a club we believe that the match should not have been played. Under the circumstances a normal course was impossible and it was downright dangerous for the players”, reports Racing Genk.
The Belgian club also believes that the home club has not done enough to make the field playable. “KRC Genk objected in vain to the referee before the start of the competition and is therefore taking legal action. We also want to start the debate in order to impose stricter demands on clubs at the highest level, so that matches are not played in conditions that stand in the way of normal football.”
In addition to Genk, Kortrijk has also filed a complaint with the Belgian football association KBVB. That squad lost on snowy ground in Ostend. “We should not listen to people who decide that we play because the ball rolls. He rolls everywhere, because a ball is round”, grumbled Van den Brom Saturday after the defeat of his club.

Water polo: On 23 January it has to be done for the water polosters in Trieste
08.14: In the agenda of Arno Havenga there is a big red circle for quite some time at Saturday 23 January. “On the 23rd, at 6:00 or 8:00, against Hungary or Greece. Then it has to be done for us,” says the national coach of the Dutch water polo sters prior to the Olympic qualification tournament in Trieste. “Which country we meet in the semifinals doesnt matter, thats a bit of a difference. We just have to win, done. And were ready for that.”
The water polosters leave their bubble in Zeist on Sunday for an even tougher bubble in the Italian city of Trieste. Anything to keep the coronavirus out of the door. “Upon arrival we immediately receive a quick test and a PCR test. Each participating country has its own bus, its own part of the hotel and fixed times when you can go to the dining room and the swimming pool,” says Havenga. “We cant take a step outside the hotel. Anyone who breaks the rules will be sanctioned. You can even be kicked out of the tournament as a team.”
Because of all the coronar restrictions, there was no match in the run-up to the OCT. The 46-year-old Rotterdammer let his team play mutual duels, imitating a real match setting as well as possible with, among others, official referees along the bath edge. “The feeling about the preparation is good. But we cant measure it. That should only be shown at the tournament itself,” says Havenga. The water polosters start the OCT Tuesday against Slovakia and then play in the group against Italy and France. Friday will be the quarter-finals, one day later the crucial semi-finals in which the two tickets to Tokyo are at stake.
Orange retains bad memories of Trieste, where in 2012 it seized alongside a ticket to the London Olympics as a reigning Olympic champion. Italy was in the decisive duel with 7-6 too strong. Four years later, at the OCT in Gouda, the weather went wrong at the decisive moment, then against Spain (7-10). “Back to Trieste, well,” says Havenga with a sigh. “That was a very different time. I wasnt a head coach then, and the team was in a completely different phase. The situation is very different now. Over the past few years, we have always participated in the medals.”
The water polosters became champion of Europe in 2018, after three times silver at European Championships and a World Cup. At last years European final round, with a ticket for the winner to the Games, things went wrong. Orange finished fourth and saw the third chance to compete for the Tokyo Games flew away. Now there is one chance left, in Trieste. Havenga: “Its really about that one game. We did not ignore that in the preparation: on 23 January, bam; then it must be done.”
