RIVM protocol contact investigation adapted after telephone call ministry

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) asked the RIVM on Friday evening to reverse a change in the protocol for source and contact research. This was done immediately afterwards.

On Thursday the RIVM just decided to cancel the extra check call because the quarantine period has been reduced from fourteen to ten days. Contacts of corona patients now have to be called three times again by the GGD about their health and quarantine status.

For the RIVM, the reasons for reducing the number of ringing moments have not changed. “A consideration has been made as to what is more important, that is apparently the plan,” says the spokesperson. Whether the ministry will make more frequent requests to adjust RIVM protocols is unclear. “I’m not saying it never happens, but I don’t know.”

Integrated picture

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport calls the amendment to the protocol, if requested, the result of joint consultation between the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the RIVM and the Municipal Health Centres. “In consultation, we decided to make an integral picture, which includes the new upscaling plan,” says a spokesperson for Minister De Jonge

It is unclear why it is necessary to wait until the new scaling up plan of the GGD is ready. The plan will include how many source and contact surveys will be taken into account in the autumn and how many extra staff will be needed to make the calls.

The RIVM protocol serves as a manual for the GGD in source and contact research. It states, among other things, how often and when close contacts of a corona patient should be called.

‘RIVM misses out on its own motivation’

Before last month chairman Jet Bussemaker of the Council for Public Health & Society in New Year’s Eve noted that the RIVM and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport have become too mixed up in the corona crisis.
