RKC is almost certain of Eredivisie preservation after victory over dramatic Groningen

RKC Waalwijk will almost certainly play in the Eredivisie next season. Thanks to the 3-1 victory at FC Groningen, which was dramatic in the Mandemakers Stadium especially before the break, the Brabanders seem to have built up a safe margin.
The Waalwijkers appeared in special Villa Pardoes-shirts to raise money for charity and the new equipment made great deeds. RKC did get help from the rear guard of Groningen, because they played for Sinterklaas several times in the first half. First it was Damil Dankerlui who intercepted a too short replay ball and saw it completed by Finn Stokkers and later the same Stokkers also benefited from miscommunication in the Groningen defense, which made it 2-0 for RKC within 25 minutes. Even before the break, the margin became even larger for the home team.
Richard van der Venne was sent deep and took the ball out of the air in one go to get away from Peter Leeuwenburgh, the keeper of Groningen. With that surprising 3-0 position, the players went into the dressing room, where trainer Danny Buijs of the Pride of the North probably let it storm. He brought three new players at the start of the second half and that helped somewhat, because the guests came to 3-1 in minute 58 via Jรถrgen Strand Larsen and were able to think of a result again. In the future, however, Groningen made no claim to another goal and RKC could easily keep control.

The three points were thus relatively easily crossed by the Waalwijkers, who seem certain of enforcement due to the victory. They now stand with 31 points out of 31 games in fourteen place and cherish a five-point lead in sixteen place. Groningen, meanwhile, is doing very bad business in the battle for the playoffs, as it could have taken distance. Now teams like Go Ahead Eagles, NEC, sc Heerenveen and SC Cambuur are still smelling their chance.
