Willy van de Kerkhof would always have a base place in Orange for Davy Klaassen. According to the former international, the midfielder of Ajax is better than all its competitors in the midfield of the Dutch national team.
Klaassen played last Sunday against Bosnia and Herzegovina (3-1 win for Orange) after three years of absence again an interland. That could count on the approval of Van de Kerkhof. “It was already clear to me that Klaassen belongs in it for a while,” he says to the Algemeen Dagblad. “They call De Roon the breakwater, but Klaassen is a lot better. When Ajax brought him back to the Netherlands, I already said that he would be back in Orange within three months.”
De Helmonder, who himself played 67 interlands for the Dutch team, did not understand why Ronald Koeman did not call Klaassen. “I asked Koeman once when I saw him as a national coach at PSV: why doesn‘t Klaassen play with you? “Not in shape, “said Ronald. But for me it’s simple: a bad Klaassen is still better than De Roon. If I was a national coach, I gave him a fixed number, number 8, and he always played.”
