Russia exits American and Polish diplomats

Russia is going to evict ten American diplomats in response to new sanctions imposed by the United States. That is what the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov announced.

At

least eight US government officials will be put on a sanction list and Lavrov says he is looking at “painful measures” against American companies in Russia.

Affecting US Elections

Yesterday, the US announced its deposition of ten Russian diplomats in response to a major Russian hack that hit a number of government agencies last year. Russia would also have tried to influence last years US presidential elections.

Russia reacted furiously and is now expelling the same number of American diplomats.

Following on from the United States, Poland decided to send home three Russian diplomats because, according to Poland, they “carried out activities that undermine Poland”. Russia, in turn, expells five Polish diplomats.

Summit in Europe

US President Biden said earlier today that he wants to work on improving relations with Russia. He proposed to organise a summit in Europe this summer.

Minister Lavrov said that Russia is positively opposed to the offer of such a summit and is studying the proposal.
