Arantxa Rus didn’t come as a surprise at the restart of the tennis season. The global number 70 bow in the first round of the Palermo gravel tournament for Donna Vekic: 1-6, 2-6.
Rus struggled the whole duel with her storage and showed herself especially vulnerable on her second service. She didn’t get any breakpoints in just two of her eight service rounds and the Croatian Vekic, placed sixth in Sicily, broke her no less than six times.
The 29-year-old Russian had the occasional chance to do something in return, but her five years younger opponent, the number 24 in the world, smothered the most danger in the bud.
The match between Russian and Vekic was the first official tennis match since the season had to be discontinued in March due to the coronacrisis.
