Russian wins and gets to compete in New York with Serena Williams

Arantxa Rus has not been sitting still since international tennis was restarted on August 3. In her thirteenth match (six singles and seven doubles) in three weeks she reached the Western & Southern Open in the second round.

The 29-year-old qualifier was the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck with 6-2, 6-3 the boss and meets in the next round none other than Serena Williams. In 2018 she lost at Wimbledon with 7-5, 6-3 to the American greatness.

The Western & Southern Open will be held at Flushing Meadows in New York, the same park where the US Open will start in a week. Around Flushing Meadows a so called corona bubble has been created to ensure that tennis players and tennis players can play their tournaments safely.

Russian is approaching highest ranking

Rus is the number 72 in the world and is now virtually up six places on the WTA rankings. If she also wins from Williams, she’ll come close to her best ranking ever: 61st in 2012. Last week in Prague, she already won a great victory on Anastasia Pavljuchenkova.
