Lara van Ruijven’s teammates reacted with dismay to the death of the 27-year-old short track star. Van Ruijven died Friday evening in a hospital in Perpignan from complications of an autoimmune disease.
“Rest easy, dear Lara. The go-getter, with your unforgettable smile and your sweet caring character. I’m going to miss you so much… forever in my heart“, writes former teammate Jorien ter Mors, who together with Van Ruijven, Schulting and Yara van Kerkhof captured olympic bronze at the Pyeongchang Games on the relay
Sulting shares a reminder. “You once said to me, in the heatbox, before the start of my EK relay final debut, that it would be alright. This is what I said to you 2 weeks ago. But it didn’t work out. I’m going to miss you so much, dear Boot. I love you.”
“Rest easy, sweet tough beautiful Lara. Me, us, everybody can’t live without you, and yet we have to let you go. Your panther heart will be in our hearts forever. Champion you are forever,” responded shorttracker Daan Breeuwsma.
<"Dear Lara, I'm gonna miss you so much. For ten years we travelled the world together, sharing successes, but also disappointments. You were always the cheerful and positive person on our team. I'll never forget you. Rest softly Lara, you are forever in our hearts", says Sjinkie Knegt
Sportkoepel NOC*NSF reacted with great dismay to the death of Van Ruijven. “It is almost impossible to understand what happened to Lara van Ruijven and her loved ones”, says technical director Maurits Hendriks
“I got to know her as a successful young top athlete and a welcome colleague within the large group of athletes and supervisors of TeamNL.”
“The sorrow and dejection of her loved ones and everyone who knew her is great”, Hendriks continues. “We wish them much strength in coping with this incomprehensible loss. Let us hold and support each other and Lara’s environment in this difficult time.”
Two Winter Games
Van Ruijven participated with great dedication in both the Winter Olympics of Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, says Hendriks. “In 2018 Lara won bronze in the relay section of the Winter Olympics together with Yara van Kerkhof, Jorien ter Mors and Suzanne Schulting. At the time the quartet set a world record in the B-final. She also won six medals in the relay at European and World Championships.”
