A day after the dramatic elimination of Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open, Maria Sakkari provided a Greek boost. She reached the last sixteen in New York for the first time by putting Amanda Anisimova aside 6-3, 6-1.
“It was so hard to see yesterday. You can imagine how miserable Stefanos feels,” said Sakkari about the defeat of Tsitsipas, who lost six match points. “Now Greece can laugh a little again, I’m proud of that.”
Sakkari didn’t do anything crazy against Anisimova and let the 19-year-old American make the mistakes. They came many times: 27. In the next round the Greek might meet Serena Williams, of whom she won at the Western & Southern Open last week.
