Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar recently announced that he will stop as a professional footballer at the end of the season. If it is up to Schalke 04, he does not do so in Amsterdam, but in Gelsenkirchen. His old club would like to bring back the experienced striker, reports Bild.
Schalke 04 sees in Huntelaar a welcome strengthening of the selection in the fight against degradation. Schalke is seventeenth with only seven points out of fifteen matches and won a Bundesliga match last weekend (4-0 against Hoffenheim) for the first time in 358 days.
Huntelaar played seven years before Schalke 04, and in 240 matches he scored 126 goals for the Germans. Due to the arrival of Sébastien Haller, his perspective on playing time has not increased at Ajax.
According to Bild, Huntelaar is not opposed to a return and the biggest challenge for Schalke is to come to an agreement with Ajax. Ajax trainer Erik ten Hag has frequently used Huntelaar as a pinchhitter in the first half of the season. He scored five times in thirteen duels.
