PSV trainer Roger Schmidt has once again expressed his support for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroon was tested positive for doping use and was suspended for twelve months, became clear on Friday.
Schmidt already put Onanas heart under the belt. “Its a pity hes out now, because Onana is a great goalkeeper,” he said. “I dont know if it was conscious or an accident. The fact that he has been out of it for twelve months is tragic for him.”
After the won home match against FC Twente on Saturday, Schmidt again got questions about Onana. “Its a pity that Onana has been suspended from the Eredivisie. I always sympathise with the players at these moments,” said the PSV trainer in his interview with ESPN. “To suspend a player for one year because of drug use, thats too heavy. But its been for years. And in my opinion there are so few doping manipulations in football… We have such strict rules and so many tests: we better put that energy into something else.”
PSV hits Ajax twice in the remainder of this month — for the KNVB Cup on February 10th and for the competition on February 28th — and will therefore not stand against Onana. “It is not an advantage for us,” says Schmidt. “Because they have several good goalkeepers (Maarten Stekelenburg, Kjell Scherpen, Dominik Kotarski, red.) in their selection. I live with him,” he concludes.
