Schmidt expresses fuss over Ihattaren: ‘He has apologised’

The premier league debut of coach Roger Schmidt immediately made it clear that the German does not care about the status that some players have built up at PSV. Mohamed Ihattaren, for example, had to settle for an innings during the match won with FC Groningen (1-3).

“This is purely a football technical choice,” stressed Schmidt, who had previously been critical of Ihattaren‘s attitude.

Schmidt confirmed that there had been ‘an incident’ last week. Ihattaren was expelled from the training because he showed insufficient commitment. “But he apologised for that. It was not for nothing that I simply included him in the competition selection. Mo is important for us, I expect he will play enough matches.”

That other players, such as Mauro Junior, who returned from Heracles, took their chances, Schmidt did well. “This is only good for competition

“I started this job unprejudiced. Every player is the same for me”, Schmidt continues. “For me, this line-up was not at all surprising. Every week I set up the team that I think has the most chance of winning at that moment”

Donyell Malen, who has recovered from a severe knee injury, was given a central spot in the front. “I didn’t suffer from anything anymore. I did get a tap on my hamstring, but that’s part of it”

And all the way back or not, from the penalty spot on he failed miserably at a score of 1-2. “One of their players was mobbing that spot. I put it on and got it wrong”, the striker was disappointed. “But of course he just has to get in.”

According to Malen it was no more than a blot on the match, just like the blunder of Yvon Mvogo just after half-time. “It didn’t go perfectly today, but in a good way. Groningen made it small and compact. We also have to find ways to play through it”

Schmidt: “It was a difficult match. We didn’t do everything right, but we worked hard for the result”
