Schmidt has a strong start: Benfica also wins big victory in its own country

Roger Schmidt has a promising start as a trainer of Benfica. After the convincing 4-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the Champions League preliminaries, O Glorioso also set Arouca aside with playful ease in the Portuguese competition: 4-0.
Schmidt cleared a base place for David Neres, while Jan Vertonghen sat on the bench. The German practice master saw that it hit after just eight minutes. Gilberto headlined a cross by Alejandro Grimaldo. Benfica reigned supreme in the Estádio da Luz, but the 2-0 fell only three minutes before the break. Rafa Silva worked from close quarters inside. Then it went fast. Arouca player Quaresma got red and due to a volley by Enzo Fernández, Benfica still visited the changing rooms with a big lead.
In the second half, Benfica was able to take some gas back. In the end, a fourth hit followed. Rafa Silva hit the goal after 86 minutes after a low cross. Neres wasnt on the field at that time. Schmidts team can now prepare for Tuesdays return against Midtjylland.
