‘Schmidt message arrives at Vertonghen: Premier League return beckons’

Jan Vertonghen may still leave Benfica before closing the transfer market. The Belgian defender has lost his base place under Roger Schmidt and wants to play at the World Cup with it, says Het Nieuwsblad.
Vertonghen is thinking about his future, it sounds. It is reported that the 35-year-old stopper can count on interest from the Premier League, while โ€œsome top Belgian clubsโ€ are also keeping a close eye on the situation. Vertonghen, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur, would not rule out a return to England.
21-year-old Brazilian Morato gains confidence from Schmidt alongside routine Nicolรกs Otamendi in the heart of defense. Vertonghen has been a fixture at Benfica for the past two seasons, but only came into action for one minute this season. Because O Glorioso won the last four games, Schmidt has little reason to consider Vertonghen as a base player again.
Vertonghen came over from Spurs in August 2020. He played there for eight years, since he left Ajax in 2012.
