Schmidt shares less news for Vertonghen: ‘Must pick the best players’

At Benfica, Jan Vertonghen does not have to hope for playing minutes for the time being. Under coach Roger Schmidt, the defender barely gets to work and there seems to be little change in that either.
Vertonghen was still a base pawn at Benfica last season, but that has changed since Schmidt‘s arrival. The defender barely gets into action and lost his spot to Morato. โ€œI have a plan for all players, but we should always try to have the best team on the field,โ€ Schmidt said at a press conference.
โ€œI know the story of Jan. He is an excellent player and a good person. He was a basic player at other big clubs, such as Benfica, but right now it’
s what it is: I have to draw up the best players and right now Morato is doing well,โ€ he concluded.
It is also questionable whether Vertonghen will also stay at Benfica. The 35-year-old defender can already count on interest from the Premier League and some teams from Belgium reportedly showed interest in Vertonghen.
