Alfred Schreuder had a lot to say before the match against Red Bull Salzburg. The trainer of Ajax discussed Lisandro Martínez, Mohamed Ihattaren, Remko Pasveer and any reinforcements, among others.
Ajax and Manchester United concluded a mega deal worth 67 million euros for Martínez at the end of last week. “Yes, it is a shame that a player of such caliber is sold, but we also know that it belongs to Ajax. We hope his replacement arrives soon. It has been a good deal for Ajax. I‘m not going to go into names, but we’re working to strengthen ourselves in that position,” says Schreuder at Ziggo Sport. The Barnevelder did not want to go into the name Calvin Bassey.
Ajax extended Kenneth Taylor‘s contract last week. A positive signal, says Schreuder. “When it became clear that I was going to be a trainer, I spoke to Kenneth and explained to him the plans that Ajax and I have with him. I am glad that a boy from his own youth chose Ajax. That’s a great sign. He is an all-round and two-legged midfielder, dominant at the ball. In terms of aggressiveness, he can improve a bit, but it is a very complete football player.”
For the time being, Jay Gorter defends the goal. Pasveer is on the way back. “Remko has been able to train reasonably well over the past few days. Hopefully he can continue the line, so he can make minutes on Saturday (against Eintracht Frankfurt, ed.). The battle is still open. Remko still has to make his minutes, he deserves that even after such a great season.”
iHattarende Cceit and Voetbal International reported on Sunday that Ihattaren is currently suffering from threats and intimidation. That‘s why the midfielder is absent. “I can’t tell you much about that. There is contact with him from the club, which is important. Yeah, I stopped by to see him, but that was after training camp. I wanted to get to know his mother, which is just important to me,” says Schreuder about that.
HallerThe situation surrounding Sébastien Haller has also affected Schreuder. The French striker of Borussia Dortmund has testicular cancer, it was announced on Monday. “I think everyone is shocked. Last night I got that message on my phone, then you‘re just shocked. Outside of football, these are the worst things. The players and clubs have contact with each other, because this goes far beyond football.”
SportyThe players of Ajax are getting fitter little by little, says Schreuder. “We are well on the way. Players have to make minutes, you will see today that some players will play sixty minutes. Physically, we still have a long way to go. We are also waiting for a few reinforcements. There is still time, so we won’t let ourselves go crazy.”
As far as reinforcements are concerned, is there anything to come? “I don‘t know. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Gerry Hamstra and Edwin van der Sar are busy. It would be nice if we could expect one or two more.”
