David Neres, back after an injury, Sergiño Dest and Carel Eiting were the best-known names on the side of the Amsterdammers.
After Eiting opened the score, the Germans drew just after the break via Marcus Ingvartsen. Union Berlin even took a lead. Marius Bülter was the celebrated man.
Ajax prevented defeat in the end, as Jurgen Ekkelenkamp worked the ball against the ropes. It remained unbeaten in the preparation.
