Second suspect arrested after football riots in the centre of Groningen

The police yesterday arrested a second suspect on suspicion of involvement in last Saturday’s football riots in the city centre of Groningen.

It concerns a man from Groningen. Sunday a first suspect was arrested.

German and Groningen football supporters attacked each other on Saturday evening at the Kromme Elleboog in the city centre. They pelted each other with, among other things, terrace furniture, reports RTV Noord.

The city council’s talking about the riots tonight. There would have been indications that around a practice match on Sunday between FC Groningen and the German Arminia Bielefeld “something would happen”. As a precaution, the city council had already forbidden the supporters of Arminia Bielefeld to come to the practice match. An emergency order was also ready.

The fighting the night before would not have been foreseen by the municipality.
