Serena Williams again one step closer to the dreamed 24th grandslam title

Serena Williams successfully continued her hunt for a 24th Grand Prix title on Monday. The top American tennis player finished in the fourth round of the US Open with Maria Sakkari from Greece. She finished the job in three sets (6-3, 6-7 (6) and 6-3) and is now in the quarter finals.

Williams therefore keeps an eye on equalizing the record number of overall victories in a grandslam tournament. This milestone, with 24 titles, is still in the hands of the Australian Margaret Court.

Serena Williams defeated Kirstie Ahn (America), Margarita Gasparyan (Russia) and Sloane Stephens (America) successively in the previous rounds. The 38-year-old Williams, now the current number eight in the world, got quite some opposition from Sakkari. In the decisive third set, the Greek player, the number 22 of the WTA-ranking, even took a 2-0 lead, but could not push through in the end. Williams then placed the decisive break at a 4-3 lead and then served out the game. She took revenge for her recent defeat at the tournament in Cincinnati (third round) against Sakkari.

There is an excellent opportunity for Williams to take the title in New York. Many world leaders, including Ashleigh Barty (number 1) Simona Halep (number 2) and Kiki Bertens (7), missed the grand slam tournament because of the coronavirus. As a result, Williams has already been placed third. However, her last triumph in a grandslam tournament dates back to 2017, when she won the Australian Open.

The Dutch contribution to the US Open was already reduced to zero after the first round. Arantxa Rus lost as the only representative of our country in three sets of the American Ann Li.
