Apart from the loss of Teun Koopmeiners and Memphis Depay, the Nations League match against Poland posed few problems for the dominant Dutch team (0-2). VoetbalPrimeur draws seven conclusions.
Orange confidentThe game with Poland was the penultimate game of the Orange, before the World Cup starts in November with a group match against Senegal. The team looked fresh, eager, mature, creative and made a wonderful 0-1 via Denzel Dumfries, Steven Bergwijn, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo end station. Did we watch a title candidate at the World Cup in Warsaw?
Van Gaal Unbeatable Orange is now unbeaten in the last 31 competitive matches under Louis van Gaal, with the exception of games that ended with a penalty series. The last loss dates from September 1, 2001 (!). This deserves applause and says a lot about how the national coach also provides guidance to the internationals in his third term of office.
Goal! Or rather: great goal! 🤩 After a formidable attack, the man in blood taps the ball into the ball and so the Orange is ahead within fifteen minutes. #POLNED pic.twitter.com/K48OWe6O0N

Chairs under the LatTim Krul, Maarten Stekelenburg, Justin Bijlow, Jasper Cillessen, Mark Flekken and now Remko Pasveer: in the last twenty international matches, six different goalkeepers were below the Orange bar. The musical chairs against Belgium will probably be continued on Sunday. If that doesn‘t happen unexpectedly, Pasveer is suddenly the big favorite to goalkeeper at the World Cup.
Injury spook is aroundThe loss of Teun Koopmeiners (head injury) and Memphis Depay (hamstring) was a blemish on the victory, while Frenkie de Jong and Steven Berghuis were exchanged as a precaution. There is little chance that they will all be able to play against Belgium on Sunday. Good news is that Koopmeiners, who was on the field for less than a minute when he collided, is already feeling a little better. Bonus: invaders like Steven Berghuis and Vincent Janssen did an excellent job.
‘Number 10‘ Gakpo does it when necessary. The pressure was great: Gakpo started as number 10 and had to show it, because Van Gaal will choose Davy Klaassen in the last Nations League match against Belgium. “Gakpo performed his duties,” the national coach concluded afterwards. PSV’er prefers to play from the left side, but Van Gaal has other plans. “I think he has everything to be a good 10.”
Finally, the NulVan Gaal warned beforehand: defensively, things can and should be better with the Dutch national team. “We scored a lot of goals under my leadership, but we also got a lot against them,” he noted. He is not completely satisfied yet, but at least the Orange defense kept zero again. That had not yet happened in 2022.
Next up: Belgium (and Final Four) The Netherlands and Belgium will compete in the Derby of the Low Countries on Sunday for victory in Group 4 of the A Division of the Nations League. The big favourite is Orange: “we” can lose by two goals to the Red Devils, who were too strong for Wales on Thursday night (2-1). In the final phase, Roberto Martinez received a red card, allowing assistant national coach Thierry Henry to take over his duties at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
If the Dutch Team qualifies for the Nations League Final Four, the KNVB will host the mini-tournament between the winners of the four A-groups in June 2023. In 2019, the Dutch team and Ronald Koeman also made it to the final four and even the final, in which they lost 1-0 to host country Portugal. As a successor to Van Gaal, Koeman will then sit on the couch again next year.
