Siem de Jong‘s American football adventure in the Major League Soccer is now over. FC Cincinnati did not renew the contract of the former player of Ajax and PSV, which can be used both as an attacking midfielder and in rush hour.
The 31-year-old De Jong announced the decision of his employer via Instagram. “It was a difficult year,” he writes, “but complaining about it in 2020 feels like unnecessary. I’ll never forget the people I‘ve worked with. I want to thank everyone and wish them the best for the future.”
De Jong exchanged Ajax in February for FC Cincinnati, the club where Jaap Stam has been the trainer since May. It wasn’t a success. He took action in sixteen matches, but did not convince with zero goals and zero assists. Cincinnati ended up at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
The six-time international, who won the Australian title with Ajax four times during an earlier period (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and won the Australian title with Sydney FC (2019), will be able to transfer free in search of a new club through the step of Cincinnati.
