Sneakers worn by Kanye West deliver record price at auction

A pair of sneakers that rapper and former presidential candidate Kanye West wore at the Grammys award ceremony in 2008 has delivered a record sum at an auction. Auction house Sothebys hammered the shoes, a prototype of the Nike Air Yeezy 1, for 1.8 million dollars (1.5 million euros).

The shoes were bought by Rares, an app that allows users to buy shares in valuable sneakers. If the sneakers are then resold, users share in the profit.

At this performance, West wore the pair of sneakers:

At the Grammy Awards ceremony in 2008, Kanye West put on the naughty shoes by wearing a pair of sneakers that connoisseurs could not bring home. The pair of half-height black leather sneakers with beige sole proved to be the kick-off for a collaboration between West and Nike. That cooperation would last until 2013.

Then West switched to Adidas. Meanwhile, the Yeezy shoe line of West Adidas is estimated to be $1.7 billion per year. West makes a little $200 million on that.

The last auction record for a pair of sneakers was registered to basketball legend Michael Jordan, with $615,000. Last year this amount was paid for a pair of Air Jordan 1s that he wore in a training match in Italy in 1985, and he broke the backboard of the basket at a dunk.
