Bad news for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp. The manager has announced that he will no longer be able to appeal to Joël Matip for the rest of this season. The defender has sustained a severe ankle injury.
The Liverpool defender suffered the injury during last Thursdays topper against Tottenham Hotspur. Matip had to leave the field after a duel with Heung-Min Son. This is partly why Liverpool struck twice on Deadline Day: Ben Davies came over from Preston North End, and Ozan Kabak made the switch from Schalke 04 to Liverpool.
“Unfortunately, we found out that Joël has to miss the rest of the season,” says Klopp on the Liverpool website. “But he will be ready for the start of next season and will probably be able to participate in the preparation.” Matip played the match against Tottenham after the duel with Son, but suffered too much damage to his ankle ligaments to get into action this season.
Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Joel Matip is set to miss the remainder of the 2020/21 season due to an ankle ligament injury.
