Space vehicle must bump into space stone on purpose

Today, an exciting space mission from NASA begins. The company has launched an unmanned space vehicle. The vehicle intentionally bumps into an asteroid. That‘s a big piece of space stone.

The space stone is not dangerous to the Earth. Still, researchers want to try to tap the stone. If it succeeds, the asteroid slides up about 10 inches into its orbit through the bang.

Space scientists would like to know if such a collision will succeed. Because if there is ever a piece of space stone on its way to Earth, it can be very dangerous.

So when an asteroid collides on Earth, it can have major consequences. But the chance that such a disaster really happens is very small. Still, scientists are keeping a close eye on it.

Whether the test collision really succeeds is still a wait and see. The space vehicle probably won’t be in exactly the right place until next September.
