Spanish doctors call for resignation of chief epidemiologist of government

On Saturday, the Spanish Medical Association demanded the resignation of the chief epidemiologist of the government, Fernando Simon, national figure in the fight against the pandemic.

The organization representing the profession demanded the immediate resignation of Dr. Fernando Simon (…) for his manifest and prolonged incompetence during the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic, in a statement.

A well-known face in Spain, Dr Simon regularly reviews the health situation of the country, one of the most affected in the world, at a popular television press conference.

The drop of water was an analysis by Dr Simon on Thursday who, according to the Order of Physicians, minimizes cases of Covid-19 in the profession, which place us among the most contaminated in the countries of our neighbourhood, recalled the Order in its press release.

This is not the first time that the director of the Health Emergency Center of the Ministry of Health has caused the anger of caregivers.

Last week, Dr. Simon said he was sorry on television after comments deemed sexist about contagious nurses, at the request of the government and after the indignation of the Order of Nurses.

The 57-year-old epidemiologist has also been criticized in the past by opposition parties and some of his colleagues, who felt that he was too late in recommending drastic measures at the beginning of the first wave of coronavirus in the spring, and had sometimes minimized the impact of the pandemic.

Spain is hit hard by the pandemic, with nearly 1.5 million cases and more than 40,000 deaths from the disease.

Known for his hoarse voice and informal speaking, Fernando Simon has worked in Latin America and Africa, as well as for the European Union and the World Health Organization.
