Sparta defeats Fortuna and books third win in a row

Sparta Rotterdam won the third match in a row at Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie. After victories with Willem II (1-3) and FC Twente (0-2), it now became 0-1 thanks to a goal of Lennart Thy. The Rotterdammers had not succeeded in winning three away matches in a row at the highest level since the early 1970s.

The defeat was a new experience for Fortuna coach Sjors Ultee. Since his appointment as head coach at the beginning of December, his team took 13 points in five duels. Predecessor Kevin Hofland had only achieved 3 points in the first eight competition duels. Sparta had also started the season with the first victory only in the eighth round, but in Sittard coach Henk Frasers team won number six.

Fortuna goalkeeper Yanick van Osch had shortly before rest prevented Deroy Duarte from putting the guests ahead of the start. But he couldnt stand up to Thys efforts in the 57th minute. The hit, the ninth of the German, was the end of a handsome attack with Mario Engels as declarant. On the other hand, Lisandro Semedo was close to the equalizer but goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and defender Dirk Abel kept the ball with a joint effort out of the goal. Sparta climbed to eighth place, Fortuna stands thirteenth.
