Not all Dutch people are cheering for Feyenoord at 21:00 on Wednesday evening. Roel lives in Haarlem, but is a passionate fan of AS Roma and has had a season ticket for years. He flies to the Italian capital for every home game from I Giallorossi.
In view of the Conference League final, AS Roma visited the Dutch supporter. Roel doesn‘t speak a word Italian, but still tries to be at Stadio Olimpico in all the duels. “Let’s just say I‘m in eight or nine out of ten duels,” he says on the club site. “Sometimes I traveled to Rome three times in one week. With Covid, things were more complicated, and that’s why I haven‘t been to Curva Sud as much as I wanted, even this season.”
Roel says that he fell for the passion of the Italians when he watched a game in 2002. “I don’t even remember who the opponent was, but I remember the smoke bombs, the fireworks, the atmosphere and especially the intense cheers that never stopped, a passion I had never seen before. Roma had a great team and I loved Italian football, but the real spark skipped by the passion I felt and played with.”
Although he doesn‘t speak or understand Italian, the Dutch fan knows all the songs. “I learned that by searching for videos on the internet. This is now easier thanks to YouTube. I hope it sounds a bit nice when I sing in Italian…”
