Maarten Stekelenburg balks like a plug that‘s on the season for him. The 39-year-old goalkeeper must be under the knife due to groin problems.
Ajax confirmed the news via the official channels on Wednesday. “I need surgery at my hip to get rid of my groin complaints. A months-long rehabilitation will follow. I’m going from one extreme to the other. When I returned to Ajax in 2020, I couldn‘t have suspected that I would win the double here as a basic goalkeeper”, Stekelenburg looks back on the Ajax website.
“I also didn’t expect to be on target with Orange at the European European Cup. After that, I stopped as an international to focus entirely on Ajax. And now my season is all of a sudden due to this injury, which makes me horrible,” says a disappointed Stekelenburg.
The flush in the target is now getting very thin for Ajax. Trainer Erik ten Hag has only Remko Pasveer (38) as an experienced goalkeeper, behind that are talented Jay Gorter and Charlie Setford. Both goalkeepers play their matches for Jong Ajax.
We are with you, Maarten 🙏 Maarten Stekelenburg will no longer be able to feature for Ajax this season. The goalkeeper has been sidelined for some time with an injury and now an operation will be required in order to achieve a full recovery.
