Huub Stevens started his fourth employment at Schalke 04 Saturday, but was not a miracle doctor for the wandering Königsblauen. Schalke lost in his own home to competitor Arminia Bielefeld, remains stiff at the bottom of the Bundesliga and already has 29 (!) competition duels in a row did not win.
At the start, Schalke was three points behind the PhD student, so now Arminia has reached six points. “Whether its a matter of pressure or quality? Both, I think,” says Stevens afterwards in conversation with the German media. “I already said that the players are under pressure, that they are not free in their heads. You cant solve something like that in one day. But of course it also has to do with quality.”
Schalke started the calendar year with a victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, but that turned out to be the last Bundesliga victory in 2020. However, Stevens is not afraid that his players will hang their heads. “I asked them if they still believe in it. Theyre not allowed to give up. What else do you want? There are so many races to go, we have to go on”, says 67-year-old Limburger.
Schalke concludes the year on Tuesday with a cup match against Regionalliga club SSV Ulm 1846. On 2 January the competition against Hertha BSC is waiting again, but Stevens will make way again in principle.
