Storm run on free train tickets in Belgium

Within a day, almost half a million Belgians have already signed up for free train tickets.

The action whereby all residents over 12 years of age can apply for a free twelve-car pass is an initiative of the Belgian government. The scheme is intended to support the tourism sector, which has been hit hard by corona.

With the twelve rides card, Belgians can make two free train journeys per month for six months from 5 October. Initially, the cards were supposed to be available as early as June, but due to fears of overcrowded trains during the summer holidays, the launch has been postponed twice.
