Suspected attack Rushdie is 24-year-old man, writers condition still unclear

US police have revealed the identity of the attacker of British Indian writer Salman Rushdie. It concerns 24-year-old Hadi Matar from Fairview town in upstate New Jersey, police told a news conference.

Rushdie was attacked at a lecture in upstate New York this afternoon. Nothing has been disclosed about his condition. Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen. The police announced that he is still in surgery.

A doctor who attended the lecture was able to provide first aid. He was then taken to the hospital by helicopter. The doctor told US media that the Rushdies condition is serious, but there is a chance of recovery.

The attackers motive is unknown. The FBI is investigating with the police. They assume that the perpetrator acted alone, but that is not certain. The intention is that Hadi Matars home will be searched in the short term.
