Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has instructed the armed forces to observe a truce as long as the Taliban does so. The extremist Taliban have just proclaimed a three-day truce on the occasion of the feast at the end of Ramadan, the Eid al-Fitr. The party starts Thursday, and then the truce would last until Saturday night.
It comes a few days after one of the bloodiest attacks the country has known in a long time. On Saturday, bombs exploded at a girls school and killed at least 50 people and more than 100 wounded, mostly schoolgirls. The Taliban indignantly contradicted government accusations that they were responsible. They have stressed that they have not committed attacks in the city of Kabul for a year.
