Ten Hag: ‘Without Dest it will be thin in the back’

Erik ten Hag hopes that Sergiño Dest will stay with Ajax. “I dont want to lose him, but sometimes you cant quite control that”, said the trainer of the Amsterdammers on Friday afternoon, looking ahead to the game with RKC Waalwijk.

The 19-year-old Dest has played in the interest of, among others, Bayern Munich. The right back would like to go to the last winner of the Champions League and does not want to extend his contract with Ajax until the summer of 2022.

Higher bid

Bayern Munich already has EUR 15 million left for Dest, who played in the Ajax base team last season. However, Football Director Marc Overmars does not want to let the United States International go for that amount. The expectation is that Germanys champion will soon come up with a higher bid.

Dest would be the fourth base player to leave Ajax, after Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea), Donny van de Beek (Manchester United) and Joël Veltman (Brighton & Hove Albion). “On the one hand its a compliment that a boy from our own education is going back to the absolute top“, said Ten Hag.

In a new football podcast Kick-off, Valentijn Driessen, Mike Verweij and Pim Sedee discuss the latest transfer developments with Bayern Munichs interest in Ajax player Sergiño Dest and a preview of the new round of play in the Eredivisie. Listen to it here:

Thinking of ourselves

But we have to start over and over again. Without Dest its going to be thin in the back and we may have to enter the transfer market. The Champions League will start again next month and then we want to have a team in place” Ajax still runs the risk that Nicolas Tagliafico and André Onana will leave before the transfer market closes in October. “We respect the agreements we have made with them”, said Ten Hag. “But we have to think of ourselves at some point. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find good replacements”

Ajax may also enter the transfer market if Dest, Tagliafico and Onana remain. “If we think we can strengthen ourselves, we certainly will”, said Ten Hag.

The coach will just include Dest in the match selection and can also have Lisandro Martinez in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday. The Argentinean has recovered from the injury that cost him last weeks league game with Sparta. Tagliafico has been suspended after his red card against the Rotterdammers.
