Real Madrid is on course for the Champions League quarterfinals. A goal of Ferland Mendy in the 86th minute was enough to beat Atalanta Bergamo, who played 75 minutes with a man less: 0-1.
In Bergamo, seventeen minutes were played when referee Tobias Stieler left his mark on the eighth final between Atalanta and Real Madrid: Remo Freuler pulled the emergency brake at Ferland Mendy and had to pay for it with a red card. That was controversial, but the VAR did not intervene.
Real Madrid was able to search for the opening hit against Atalanta, which blocked the road in the Champions League before the Ajax winter stop. However, the team of trainer Zinedine Zidane did not show much: Atalanta stopped everything and was hardly embarrassed.
In the second half, the game picture did not change: Real Madrid played the ball patiently, but did not reach out to the odds. Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior were close, but could not disturb goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.
Eventually the goal fell – and again Mendy was decisive: Mendys left-back got the ball in front of his feet and placed the ball with his chocolate leg in the right corner. In three weeks, Atalanta and Real will be facing each other again.
