Tesla driver collides with police car while watching film

The driver of a Tesla crashed into a police car in the American state of North Carolina on Wednesday. The man had put his vehicle on automatic pilot in order to watch a film. No one was injured in the incident.

The collision took place while the police were on their way to another accident on the motorway.

Devainder Goli, the owner of the Tesla, was accused of watching television while driving a vehicle. He is also accused of failing to take account of the emergency services on the road.

Goli himself is said to be working as an emergency doctor.

The autopilot of a Tesla car is designed to ‘assist with the most complex aspects of driving’, the company says. However, it has also been emphasised that the system never replaces a driver: supervision is always required.
