Golf: DeChambeau wants a green jacket to muscular body
15.28 hours: During the upcoming edition of The Masters, which starts Thursday, Bryson DeChambeau will be at the center of attention. After his victory at the US Open, the 27-year-old American is the favourite to take over the coveted green jacket of Tiger Woods.
If anyone had the coronapauze well spent, it was up to DeChambeau. The strong American visited the gym daily and returned to the golf course with no less than 14 kilos of muscle mass. DeChambeau is not a sophisticated golfer, but stands out with its alternative and almost groundbreaking approach; powerful and distant strokes with irons of the same length and equipped with an extra thick grip.
“ Every day I try to get faster and stronger and I try to hit as far as I can. I feel better every day and don’t know where my ceiling is,” said DeChambeau in the run-up to the prestigious golf tournament. He promised to grow more muscle mass earlier in the run-up to The Masters.
“ I wish he had no advantage over me and the others, but the reality is that he does,” said Justin Thomas about his compatriot and also his peer. DeChambeau impressed Winged Foot almost two months ago by leaving the competition six strokes behind.
“ Bryson will feel different, because the attention is focused on him after a major‘s win and by mocking the golf laws,” said top player Rory McIlroy. “It’s a great story and I‘m just as curious as anyone how this is going to end.” At the end of September, McIlroy was even more critical. “He has found his own way. I don’t know if that‘s good or bad. But it is quite different than I think it should be,” he said.
McIlroy only needs victory over the Masters to complete his career grand slam. He won the British Open, the US Open and twice the US PGA Championship.
In April 2019, Woods was the last to put on the green jacket, traditionally intended for the winner at the Augusta Golf Course. The legend wrote golf history by conquering his fifteenth major title at The Masters. Since the return of wave after the coronapauze, Woods (44) has not shown much. “Whether I expect to join in to the prices? Yes, I expect that,” Woods said.
“ This is a job where it helps if you understand how to play. The puzzle pieces have not yet fallen into each other, when it comes to my drives or sinking. Hopefully that will happen this week.”
DeChambeau warned the competition. “I’m hitting the ball even further than at the US Open and tested this week with a driver that allows me to take another step. I just don‘t know if I’m going to use it yet because it also creates some uncertainty”, says the favorite. “But I can still beat the ball so far, it‘s also about chipping and sinking.”

On the heavy muddy course in Niel, Alvarado and Betsema took a distance from the competition in the second round. Yara Kastelijn and later Brand managed to connect. In a long sprint, Brand Alvarado was just too fast.
Annemarie Worst, who had finished second in the first two races in the Superprestige, fell early in the race and was unable to compete in the front because of material problems. She finished fifth, right behind Chastle.
“ I’m really happy with this victory,” said Brand. “I had to fight hard for this. Because of a bicycle change I got behind and after that it was difficult to pass everyone by.” The discharge at Band was large. “Ceylin and I were really risky on each other. If you have to wait for a sprint to take victory, the joy is great.”
Sweeck takes the victory with the riders. In the final round, the Belgian champion left his country- and teammate Iserbyt in the sand strip and kept his small lead over the European champion. Toon Aerts, who fell behind by a flat tire, ended third.
Lars van der Haar was the best behind the Belgian trio. He came in 44 seconds behind just before fellow countryman Corné van Kessel. Ryan Kamp, European champion under 23 years old last Saturday, finished eighth.
