The first victory is in: battered Orange shakes off tough Portugal

The Dutch team has won the first victory at the European Championships. After the 1-1 against Sweden, a meager 3-2 victory over Portugal followed. It was certainly not easy, but given the turmoil around the team, no one will be awake.
Over the past few days, it has been about main and side issues at the Orange. Jackie Groenen and Vivianne Miedema tested positive for corona, captain Sari van Veenendaal dropped out injured and a slight fuss arose about an interview Jill Roord had given to the Volkskrant. As a result, the pressure was on it.
In the initial phase of the competition, the Orange got away well. Because it didn‘t look good in the back, Portugal quickly got a big chance and even scored it, were it not that the 0-1 was frowned upon. On the other hand, it was a hit. Damaris Egurrola, who first had a base place under national coach Mark Parsons, headlined hit from a corner by Sherida Spitse.
Orange had the taste and then came to 2-0 via Stefanie van der Gragt. The Netherlands was warned about Portugal’
s winner mentality, which never gives up regardless of the standings. It turned out after the 2-1, it got a penalty after a violation by Dominique Janssen and after the arbitration took five minutes to assess whether it really was the case, the ball went on the spot.
Because the Netherlands did not come out of the dressing room sharply, the 2-2 also fell behind Daphne van Domselaar, Van Veenendaal‘s replacement. Portugal couldn’t really push through, but it fought with everything it had for a point. The Netherlands quickly seized the initiative again and gained a lead again after an hour of play. The goal scorer was Danielle van de Donk, who shot Orange brilliantly ahead.
The decision was not made and so it remained exciting until the 95th minute, but the Orange drags the victory out of the fire and has full control of placement for the next round of the European Championships. This Sunday, Switzerland will be the opponent.

Why do it difficult when you can do it beautifully? Daniรซlle van de Donk brings the Orange back in the lead. And how! #nedpor #ek2022
