Nothing’s happened here for years! A building pit near Michel gives passers-by and residents a puzzle. The CCeit investigated. The overgrown “ghost pit” is actually located in the very best part of Hamburg – almost directly under the Michel. To be more precise, on the Schaarsteinweg (Neustadt).
Hamburg: Building land in the middle of the city has been lying fallow for years
Here, directly next to the main building of the publishing house Gruner+Jahr, there was once an inconspicuous office building which housed the editorial office of the magazine “Gala”. The building was demolished years ago and the aforementioned excavation pit was dug. Apparently nothing concrete has happened since then. And nature is slowly reclaiming the area. There is greenery and flowers everywhere.

2017 there was once a project “Living and working on Schaarsteinweg” and prestigious architectural firms took part in a facade competition. But the project was never realized with a nine-storey corner building, the presentation of which can still be discovered on the Internet.
According to the Mitte district office responsible for building permits, there are currently no building applications for Schaarsteinweg. A CCeit enquiry to the owner of the land, the Hamburg-based “PGH Planungsgesellschaft Holzbau”, remained unanswered.
