Dominic Thiem has reached the semi-<strong>finals of the US Open with great power. The Austrian is seen as the big favorite for the final victory, now that he is not bothered by Novak Djokovic (disqualified), Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (both absent in New York)
Thiem left the talent Alex de Minaur (Aus, 21) without a chance (6-1, 6-2, 6-4) and is therefore the first Austrian ever to reach the last four at Flushing Meadows.
The excellent running ability of the 21-year-old Australian proved far from sufficient to withstand the enormous and precise firepower of Thiem (2). The Austrian, who had already lost four times as a grand finalist, beat 43 winners and used seven of fourteen breakpoints.
In the semifinals 27-year-old Thiem stumbled upon Daniil Medvedev, who he had mastered in the first two of their three previous encounters.
Number five of the world Medvedev defeated Andrej Roeblev with 7-6 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Medvedev, who lost to Nadal in the finals last year, did not give up a set in this tournament. Roeblev was in the quarter finals of a grand lamb tournament for the second time.
Also in 2017 they were the final in New York. In the equal game between two strong serving baseline players, only one breakpoint was noted and it was deuce only once.
In the tiebreak of the first set, Roeblev took a decisive distance, but from 6-3, things went wrong. He left three setpoints unused, out of frustration threw his racket on the ground and capitulated to the first setpoint of Medvedev, who cashed it in with his sixth ace.
After deuce in the first set only in the eleventh game, in the sixth game of the second company the only breakpoint of the almost 2.5 hour game was a fact and then Medvedev struck immediately.
In the tiebreak of the third set Medvedev gave away a 5-3 lead, but then decided the game with two points in a row.
His approaching opponent Dominic Thiem had no problem with Alex de Minaur (6-1, 6-2, 6-4) from Australia.
