“This case is about a predator,” trial against R. Kelly launches

After 25 years of accusations and rumors about R. Kelly went round, New York‘s lawsuit against the American r&b singer began today. The 54-year-old former superstar is accused, among other things, of sexual abuse of minors, kidnapping and bribery.

If he is found guilty in all respects, he risks a ten-year imprisonment to life. According to the charges, Kelly abused women, girls and at least one boy for decades.

At the start of the trial, the prosecutor labeled Kelly as a predator, a common term in the US for suspects of structural sexual abuse.

This case is about a predator, she said. A man who used lies, manipulations, threats, and physical violence to dominate his victims and avoid his responsibility for years. He used every trick in the predator manual.

Eating with permission only

According to the prosecutor, Kelly filmed and photographed his victims during sex and threatened to make the footage public. The girls and women should only be allowed to eat and go to the bathroom with his permission. They shouldn’t be allowed to look at other men. When conveying the abuse, the singer would have used his bodyguards, drivers and other members of his entourage.

The earliest allegations date back to the 90s, the time of Kelly‘s greatest successes. If I could turn back the hands of time and I believe I can fly became world hits and his singles and albums went over tens of millions of times.

It was also the period when rumors increased about Kelly’s preference for young girls. In 1994 he married singer Aaliyah at the age of 27, then 15 years old. Because she lied about her age, the marriage was declared invalid.

Prosecutors are now trying to prove that Kelly arranged a fake ID by bribery that said Aaliyah was 18 years old. The singer died in a plane crash in 2001.

Never convicted

Since the 90s, several women have accused him of abuse, but it never came to a conviction. In 2008, Kelly was acquitted of making child pornography. At the beginning of 2019, the singer‘s behavior was widely measured in the documentary Surviving R. Kelly. A few months later, his arrest followed.

Kelly, whose full name is Robert Kelly, denies that he did something wrong. The start of the process was postponed several times due to corona. The New York case is expected to take about a month.

It’s not the only state where the singer is accused of sexual abuse. Illinois and Minnesota have similar charges to justice, and Kelly also contradicts those allegations.
