Thought of Tour victories doesn’t scare Dumoulin off: ‘I know I can do it’

When asked if it’s crazy that he can win the Tour, Dumoulin answers: “No, that’s not weird, huh. I have shown something in the past of course. I know I can do it and that I can compete here at the top of the classification.”

Successful comeback

Dumoulin won the Giro d’Italia in 2017 and finished second in the Tour in 2018. Due to an injury he didn’t compete for over a year. His return to the Tour de l’Ain and the Critérium du Dauphiné was successful.

It’s a familiar story: the Dutch team Jumbo-Visma starts the Tour with two leaders: Dumoulin and Primoz Roglic. But Dumoulin doesn’t see himself as the first leader.

Broken Tour is not a Tour

There is a possibility that the Tour de France would have to be aborted if the coronavirus were to spread even more strongly. All over France code yellow is currently in force, while for Nice, where the Tour starts on Saturday, and Paris, where the Tour traditionally ends in three weeks on the Champs-Elyséss, code orange even applies.

Is that a reason for Dumoulin to go full throttle immediately, so that he might have the yellow jersey in his possession should the Tour end prematurely?

“No, I don’t take that into account. We’re here to win a big round. In my experience, that’s three weeks. If the Tour stops earlier, it’ll always be the Tour that wasn’t a Tour.”
