Three years in jail for wife Mexican drug boss El Chapo

Mexican drug lord El Chapo‘s wife has to go to jail for three years. A judge in the United States convicted her for her role in the violent Sinaloa drug cartel.

According to the judge, 32-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro has been guilty of drug smuggling, money laundering and carrying out financial transactions for the cartel. Prosecutors had demanded a sentence of four years in jail.

She asked the judge for forgiveness and said she regretted her actions. Last June, she confessed to being guilty. Not only does she receive a prison sentence, but also has to pay a fine of 1.5 million dollars (1.3 million euros).

Permanently in danger

As part of her plea, she admitted that she acted as a courier between her husband, who is actually Joaquin Guzman, and other members of the Sinaloa cartel, when El Chapo was trapped in a Mexican prison.

Coronel Aispuro’s lawyer asked the judge to be lenient on her because she ended up in the drug business at a young age. โ€œShe met Joaquin Guzman when she was underage. She was 17 years old and married him on her 18th birthday,โ€ her lawyer said.

According to the counsel, she is also in permanent danger, because sources within the enforcement services leaked to the media that she was working with the US government. โ€œI don‘t know if she can ever go home.โ€

1.5 km tunnel

Coronel Aispuro, who is both American and Mexican nationality, has been with El Chapo since 2007. The couple has two daughters, who were born in 2011. She was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Washington in February.

For many years, El Chapo was the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which, under his leadership, grew into one of Mexico’s largest and most violent drug organizations. The cartel made billions from the drug trade.

In 2015, El Chapo escaped from prison via a 1.5-kilometer tunnel built under his cell. A few months later, he was arrested. During the arrest, several of his accomplices were killed. Later, he was extradited to the U.S. Two years ago, he was sentenced to life for his role in the cartel.
