Ashleigh Barty (24) will not defend her title on Roland Garros because of the coronacrisis. Australia’s number one in the world hasn’t appeared on the court for an official tennis match since the end of February.
“It’s a difficult decision, but unfortunately I won’t be competing in Europe this year,” Barty said at Instagram. “There are two reasons for my decision.”
“First, there are still health risks with covid-19. In addition, my preparation was not ideal without the presence of my coach, who cannot train with me because of the closure of state borders in Australia”
For the same reasons, she is also absent from the US Open. By canceling the grandslam tournaments in New York and Paris, Barty would normally see a cartload of ranking points go up in smoke, but the world rankings have been temporarily frozen due to the corona pandemic, so Barty is still holding her first place.
“Roland Garros last year was the most special tournament in my career, so it wasn’t a decision I made lightly,” she emphasizes. The tournament starts on September 27th.
