Title defending champion Andreescu also unsubscribes for US Open

title at this year’s US Open. The 20-year-old Canadian has opted out of the grandslam tournament in New York because she does not feel fit enough, partly due to the corona measures.

Andreescu captured the title at the US Open last year as a debutante by surprisingly winning the final from Serena Williams.

“My victory at the US Open was the highlight of my career and I will miss it,” reports Andreescu on Twitter. “But due to unforeseen circumstances, including the coronapandemic, I have not been able to prepare properly and it is not possible to play at my best level.”

More cancellations

Andreescu is certainly not the first to cancel for the tournament in New York, which starts on August 31 for empty bleachers. Kiki Bertens, Simona Halep (two-time grandslam winner), number one in the world Ashleigh Barty (one grandslam title) and Elina Svitolina have also cancelled.

The men lack big names as titleholder Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios. Novak Djokovic announced on Thursday that he will travel to the US Open.
