If two riders or two staff members of a cycling team in the Tour de France bubble test positive at the same time or have clear symptoms of the coronavirus, the whole team has to go home. This is stated in the health regulations of organizer ASO.
So if Tom Dumoulin wears the yellow jersey in the third week of the Tour – with Paris in sight – and two staff members of Jumbo-Visma get a fever, then he can forget the final victory without having tested positive himself.
When only one rider is infected within a team, only that rider will be taken out of the Tour.
The Tour starts August 29th in Nice and the organization takes the coronavirus very seriously. The aim of the ASO is “to protect the health of riders, team staff and other people involved in the Tour and to guarantee that the event can go ahead”
In the run-up to the Tour, all riders will be tested at least twice, have to keep diaries and wear mouth masks. A replacement may be appointed until 29 August 10.00 a.m. if necessary, after that no more.
Jumbo-Visma has two trump cards
Dutch Jumbo-Visma, with Dumoulin and Primoz Roglic, has two big chances for the final victory. Steven Kruijswijk was removed from the Tour team yesterday because he was too badly injured after a crash.
