In Italy, two sisters aged 14 and 3 were killed when a big tree fell on their tent. This happened at night during a storm in the Tuscan seaside resort of Marina di Massa.
The youngest girl died almost immediately, her 14-year-old sister died later in hospital. An older sister was slightly injured; she did not have to go to hospital. Their parents and a brother of 9, who were in the same tent, remained unharmed. The family is from Turin.
The police are investigating at the campsite:
Many camping guests had already left because of the weather warning. According to Italian media, the family from Turin did not want to drive in bad weather and decided to stay another night on the campsite despite the storm.
Prime Minister Conte expressed his sympathy. He says on Twitter that he is deeply saddened by “the tragic death of the two sisters” and that he gives the parents and other family members “a big, emotional hug”.
